Team Europe To Get An Extra Wildcard At 2014 Ryder Cup

Europe captain Paul McGinley will have three wildcard picks for the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles.

It means there will be nine automatic qualifying places for the 12-man team, which will aim to defend the title they won during a dramatic final day at Medinah in 2012.

It means the Irishman will have an extra pick from Jose Maria Olazabal, who led Europe to victory last year using two wildcards – Ian Poulter and Nicolas Colsaerts.

McGinley said he made the change in order to allow “a bit of flexibility”. He also said: “Hopefully this will ensure I have the right players to face the examination paper that Gleneagles will set out next September.”

“You only need to look at the record books to see we haven’t done too badly of late so I didn’t see the need to make sweeping changes.”

The rest of McGinley’s squad will be made up from the top four eligible golfers from the European Tour points list and the leading five in the world rankings.

The move comes after American captain Tom Watson recently reduced the number of his wildcard picks from four to three.
