Stenson clinches Race to Dubai with DP World Tour Championship win

Henrik Stenson sealed the Race to Dubai in emphatic fashion as he cruised to a six-shot victory at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

The world number three becomes the first player to win the Race to Dubai and FedEx Cup in the same season after he clinched the PGA Tour title with victory at their Tour Championship in September.

Stenson held a one-shot lead going into the final round on the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Resort, Dubai, and he never looked like losing as he fired a flawless 64 to beat good friend Ian Poulter to the money list and the tournament.

The Englishman closed with a 66 to finish alone in second in the tournament and the Race to Dubai – just under €1 million short of Stenson. Poulter had bet the Swede $100 that he would catch him in the standings a few weeks ago.

“It has been an incredible summer for me, the fall in America was great and now this,” said Stenson, who was second in the Open at Muirfield and third in the USPGA Championship before his FedEx Cup triumph. “It has been a dream season.

“I played so well this week. I knew the guys would try to catch me, especially Ian who never gives up. I wanted to stay ahead of him and I managed to do that.

“I don’t know how I am going to be able to top this next year but I am going to give my best in the Majors and that (to win one) would be the icing on the cake.”

Elsewhere, Harris English claimed his second PGA Tour victory in the  OHL Classic at Mayakoba and Adam Scott made it back-to-back wins in his native Australia with his Talisker Masters triumph.
