Fantasy Golf: BMW International Open

An exciting season on the European Tour continues this week at the BMW International Open in Germany.

The field will be led by home favourite Martin Kaymer and he’ll be joined by other big names, including Victor Dubuisson, Paul Casey and last week’s Irish Open winner, Mikko Ilonen.

TG had a fairly unspectacular week at Fota Island last week, with only Marcel Siem helping to save us from total embarrassment! This week we’re sure that we’ve got a successful combination of players and, fingers crossed, the potential winner in our team.

At 7,300 yards, distance isn’t really a factor at Gut Lärchenhof, but finding greens and holing a few putts will certainly put you in with a good shout come Sunday afternoon. The last time this course played host to the BMW International was back in 2012, where Danny Willett topped the field. He ranked 5th in GIR for that week and most of the contenders were inside the top-25 for GIR, showing the importance of good approach play. So, with that in mind, here’s who we’ve gone for this week…

Martin Kaymer – £2.4 million
Do we really need to explain this one? The home favourite was faultless during the US Open a couple of weeks ago and, seemingly back to his old ways, we really can’t look past Kaymer for this week’s event.

Sergio Garcia – £3.5 million
While Garcia hasn’t set the European Tour on fire this season, he’s only missed one cut. His form over the pond though has been pretty solid all year, missing only the one cut and making six top-10 finishes, including four top-5s. Sergio played well last week in the Travelers Championship over in the PGA Tour, finishing T-2 and missing out on top spot by a single stroke.

Francesco Molinari – £1.8 million
Francesco has shown good, consistent form this season and he’s been close to the winner’s circle several times this year. Four top 10s in his last nine starts are representative of this decent form, but the Italian will be desperate to get a victory under his belt, particularly with the Ryder Cup just around the corner.

Rafael Cabrera-Bello – £1.2 million
Another of the Tour’s most consistent performers in 2014. Rafa has only missed one cut all season and the Spaniard has five top-10 finishes to his. For such a good player, he should have more than two victories on the European Tour, maybe this week ha can add a third trophy to his cabinet.

Danny Willett – £1.2 million
Danny was victorious the last time the BMW International was held here at Gut Lärchenhof back in 2012. Combined with this good knowledge of the course and fond memories, the young Englishman is on good form and finished T-3 at last week’s Irish Open.

Ross Fisher – £1.6 million
Ross was the best putter on the European Tour last week at Fota Island. His unbelievable putting helped to rescue his average tee-to-green display, launching him up to a T-8 finish. If he can straighten out off of the tee a little bit and comtinue to be got with the putter, he’s got a chance of a good finish again this week.
