Eddie Pepperell wins first European Tour title in Qatar

Eddie Pepperell claimed his first European Tour title on his 129th start in Qatar, beating out playing partner Oli Fisher by a single shot.

The 27-year-old Englishman held the overnight lead alongside Fisher, but by the turn had gained a three-shot lead over his compatriot. Fisher launched an impressive comeback despite his nervy start, carding five birdies and a bogey on the first eight holes of his back nine to put him within one shot of the lead heading down the par-five last.

Fisher gave himself a good look at birdie on the 18th as Pepperell had to settle for par, but in the end a final-round of 70 was enough to finish at 72-holes and give Pepperell his first European Tour win at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.

“What a day,” he said. “Oli made it really tough and I made it tough for myself at the end there with the second shot at 18.

“I felt good all day, I felt comfortable. I didn’t feel that comfortable with my swing but I was in a great place mentally and I kept telling myself that I’m going to win this.

“This will give me confidence. When you win, you know you can win. I’ve always felt and believed I will win out here but it hadn’t happened before today. You’ve always got to take that step and that’s uneasy but at some point in everyone’s career they’ve got to do something for the first time. Hopefully this is not my last.”
