Ludvig Aberg backs Ryder Cup legend for captaincy in 2027

The European Ryder Cup team will head to Bethpage looking to defend their title.

Who is going lead Team Europe at Adare Manor in two years’ time? Ludvig Aberg knows who he wants…

Once upon a time, Ryder Cup Europe’s selection committee had more potential captains than they knew what to do with.

But then the lure of LIV Golf came along and Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Graeme McDowell all surrendered their chance to get the top job.

It was a sliding doors moment that left Luke Donald with the opportunity to prove himself to be one of the finest captains this continent has produced. If he can inspire victory for the yellow and blue at Bethpage, he might just go down as the best ever. After all, winning on opposition soil is not something either team tends to do very often, and last time the Europeans went across the Atlantic and brought home the Samuel Ryder trophy, it required a miracle.

Regardless of the outcome in New York next month, the conversation about who will lead in 2027 when the 100th anniversary of the first Ryder Cup rolls around will soon intensify.

Donald is being widely tipped for a third spell at Adare Manor, while Justin Rose seems to be his only obvious rival. When TG asked the 2013 US Open champion last month about his ambition to one day lead Team Europe, the Englishman was pretty open about it.

Justin Rose has set his sights on captaining the European Ryder Cup team after Bethpage.

“I don’t want to speak too soon but it’s something I’d like to do, for sure, to be given the opportunity,” Rose said.

“If the players felt like that’s something they would be up for, then absolutely. It’s an honor and responsibility that I would love and take seriously and give everything to.”

One of those players who would be keen for Rose to take the hotseat is Ludvig Aberg.

Aberg was a rookie last time out in what was Rose’s sixth appearance in the biennial slobberknocker against the United States. Rose was very much the veteran of Donald’s playing staff in Italy, and his leadership qualities shone through as he guided Robert MacIntyre to an unbeaten debut.

And Aberg, who stunned the world when he manage to convince Donald he was worthy of a pick just months after graduating from college and turning pro, believes Rose is a worthy successor to his compatriot.

“Justin’s career speaks for itself,” Aberg told TG. “The longevity is one of the things about Justin we don’t really think about, but he’s been doing it for so long and he’s been so good for so long.

“He really brings that experience the table. He would be a tremendous captain.”
