US Women’s Open Preview 2024: The world’s best assemble to compete for the biggest cheque in golf

Jump To: Tee times

Nelly Korda bids to make it two majors from two at the US Open where the world’s best go head-to-head at Lancaster Country Club for a cut of the biggest purse in women’s golf.

The history-making six-in-a-row wasn’t to be for World No.1 Nelly Korda at the Cognizant Founders Cup, although it didn’t take long before she was back in the winner’s circle, just one tournament later at the Mizuho Americas Open, holding off Hannah Green by a shot.

That doesn’t stop the dominant force in women’s golf from heading to the second major of the season as an overwhelming favorite to make it two from two in the five-major series and pick up a third major championship title in Pennsylvania. And with a record-breaking $12 million purse up for grabs thanks to a new partnership with financial services company, Ally, this 79th edition of the US Open is set to be as fiercely contested as ever.

Last time out, Allisen Corpuz of America claimed a maiden tour title (not a bad one to start with), shooting under par in each round to seal a three-shot victory over Charley Hull and Jiyai Shin.

Where is the US Women’s Open held?

The Lancaster Country Club in Lancaster, Pennsylvania will host the Women’s US Open for a second time having seen 20-year-old Chun In-gee pick up the first of her three major titles in 2015. The South Korean became the fourth player to win the Harton S. Semple Trophy at the first time of asking.

Lancaster has three distinct nine-hole courses with the Meadowcreek and Dogwood nines combining to comprise the 18-hole championship Flynn Course. The Meadowcreek front nine is known for its meandering routing, which requires great strategy and placement from the tee, whilst the Dogwood back nine provides its own unique challenge with its length and elevation leading to five holes of uphill second shots.

What format is the US Women’s Open?

Since 1947, the standard strokeplay format of 72 holes of 18 holes over four days has been in place. If players are tied after 72 holes, a two-hole aggregate playoff is used to determine the champion followed by a sudden death hole-by-hole match if required.

Who is in the field for the US Women’s Open?

Eight US Open champions and all top 25 players in the Rolex World Golf Rankings will tee it up in the 156-woman field for the 79th running of the tournament which saw its second-highest number of entries ever (1,897).

Winners of the last 10 US Opens, including the 10 lowest scores from 2023’s edition receive exemptions, as do the other Major champions between 2019-2023. The bulk of the remaining players exempt from qualifying are those in the top 75 of the world rankings, the top 30 from the 2023 LPGA Race to the CME Globe, individual LPGA co-sanctioned event winners, and various amateur winners from the last 12 months.

Qualifying events took place in the USA (23) and one each in Germany, Canada, and Japan between April 15 and May 20 to finalize the field with a further 62 players.

Minjee Lee won the 2022 Women's US Open with a record score and took home a record cheque.

Who will win the US Women’s Open?

The LPGA Tour is 12 tournaments deep in 2024, yet due to the irrepressible form of Nelly Korda, there have only been six different winners, including Hannah Green with a couple, Rose Zhang, Bailey Tardy, Patty Tavatanakit, and Lydia Ko.

Unsurprisingly, Korda will almost certainly start as the short-priced favorite with Australian Hannah Green also fancied to contend after a strong start to the season that’s seen the Australian win twice and shoot up to World No.5 in the Rolex Rankings.

How much does the winner of the US Women’s Open receive?

The total prize fund in 2024 increases once again, up by another $1 million from 2023’s edition at Pebble Beach. The record-breaking $12 million on offer is more than double the total from just three years ago and triple that from a decade ago.

Allisen Corpuz banked $2 million for her 2023 victory – the biggest cheque in women’s tournament history and $200k more than that received by Minjee Lee the year before.

Who has won the US Women’s Open?

There have been no repeat winners of the US Open in the last 10 years. Annika Sorenstam is a three-time champion, last winning in 2006, a decade after her back-to-back triumphs in 1995 and 1996.
