LIV Golf Invitational Jeddah: Field and teams

The Saudi-backed LIV Golf Series arrives in Jeddah for its seventh event and middle-east debut.

Once again, 48 players will compete across LIV Golf‘s latest three-round no-cut tournament, with a $25m dollar purse on offer at Royal Greens Golf and Country Club, a venue that will prove popular with the newly-crowned LIV Individual Champion Dustin Johnson, who has twice won the Saudi International here on the DP World Tour.

Graeme McDowell and Harold Varner III are also past winners of that event and will tee it up in the penultimate LIV event of the year.

Eugenio Chacarra lifted his first professional title at the LIV Golf Invitational Bangkok.

Spain’s Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra arrives in Jeddah having lifted his first professional title at the LIV Golf Invitational Bangkok. The former World No.2 amateur, who only joined the pro ranks when he signed for the rebel series, took home a cheque for $4.75m – $4m for his win and an extra $750k thanks to Fireballs GC winning the team format.

For the first time since LIV’s London launch in June there will be no changes to the field for this week’s event. It is the final individual event of the season but no one can catch DJ who became LIV’s first individual champion thanks to his 16th-placed finish in Bangkok. It was the first time the American had finished outside the top-10 in his six starts but it was still enough to secure him the title and $18m bonus!

Dustin Johnson celebrates his victory at the LIV Golf Invitational Boston.

Branden Grace and Patrick Reed are the front-runners to take the runner-up spot, which pays $8m dollars, with $4m be awarded to the golfer in third place.

Bangkok saw the dominance of Johnson’s 4Aces GC team come to an end. DJ, Reed, Talor Gooch and Pat Perez had won four consecutive events heading to Thailand but couldn’t extend their run. Despite that, 4Aces still hold a significant lead in the standings and should head to the season-ending Team Championship at Trump Doral in Miami as the No.1 seeds and favourites to take the title and $16m bonus.

Former World No.1’s Brooks Koepka, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer will be among the other stars in action in Jeddah, along with Major champions Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, McDowell, Charl Schwartzel and current Open champion Cam Smith.

The LIV Golf Invitational Jeddah gets underway on Friday, October 14, and will use a shotgun start across all three days with players heading out in groups of three. The opening round sees players draw together, with rounds two and three based on players’ positions on the leaderboard.

Alongside the individual event, which will see the winner walk away with $4m, the team event format will continue, with the 12 teams of four competing for a $5m dollar bonus fund, which is split between the top three.

Charl Schwartzel celebrates victory at the LIV Golf Invitaional Series event in London.

LIV’s first six tournaments have seen six different individual winners with victories for Schwartzel in London, Grace in Portland, Henrik Stenson in Bedminster, Johnson in Boston, Smith in Chicago, and Chaccara in Bangkok.

You can watch the Jeddah event here to see if that trend continues.
