Tom Jacobs picks out his top Wyndham Championship betting tips ahead of the PGA Tour event from Sedgefield Country Club.

And just like that, we’ve arrived at the final event of the regular PGA Tour season. The Wyndham Championship tees off at Sedgefield Country Club for an 18th consecutive year, providing a final opportunity for players to secure their spots in the lucrative end-of-year FedEx Cup playoffs.

Last year saw Aaron Rai win his first PGA Tour title, propelling him into the Ryder Cup conversation with a two-stroke victory ahead of Max Greyserman. The Englishman will tee it up again this year in a strong field that includes Adam Scott, Max Homa, Matt Fitzpatrick, Robert MacIntyre, Rickie Fowler, and the in-form Chris Gotterup.

Before revealing my Wyndham Championship betting tips, here’s everything else you need to know…

Wyndham Championship betting tips

The Longshot: David Lipsky 140/1 e/w (bet365 8 Places 1/5)

At 88th in the FedEx Cup, David Lipsky finds himself in the same position as Hojgaard and Thompson. He needs a big week to make the Playoffs, but his playing rights look set for next year. This means he can play with a little less pressure and instead focus on the positive of trying to book his starts in the remaining events.

A late-season charge has put Lipsky in 88th place in the FedEx Cup, and it has taken two 3rd place finishes in 4 starts to make it happen. 3rd last week at the 3M added to the same result at the John Deere, and now he can prosper in a similar test.

A best of 27th in three starts doesn’t inspire confidence, but that’s why he’s still a triple-digit price, and we have seen players like Aaron Rai overcome limited course form to succeed. If you are in form coming into this event, you should be able to make a run.

Lipsky’s certainly playing some of his best golf right now, as he ranked 20th in Approach and 3rd in Tee to Green last week, adding to a decent run in both categories of late. Now making all the birdies he needs to, to contend in events like this in recent starts, Lipsky can pick up his first PGA Tour win, adding to his two titles on the DP World Tour and one win on the Korn Ferry.

The Outsider: Davis Thompson 66/1 e/w (Betway 7 Places 1/5)

Davis Thompson 2024 John Deere Classic Champion

Davis Thompson is another on the outside looking in when it comes to the Top 70, and a big week here will be needed if he’s to make the FedEx Cup Playoffs for a second year running. At 78th, he won’t need a win to get into the Playoffs, but that’s the best way to do it, and there have been a few reasons for optimism of late.

Expected to kick on after claiming his first victory at last year’s John Deere Classic, it’s been a leaner season than expected for Thompson, despite some obvious highlights. 10th at the Players and 13th at the Genesis were two good results in strong fields, but the Top 10 at the Players was the only one of the year, and that’s not good enough for a player of Thompson’s potential.

The good news is, he’s been close to a couple more in recent weeks, not quite finishing off the job, but the signs are there. When 34th at the Rocket Classic, he was 13th going into Sunday, and when 18th at the John Deere, where he was defending, he was the 54-hole leader and looked set to make a run at going back-to-back. The Open Championship wasn’t good and nor was the 3M Open, but now he’s back, fully acclimatised and on a familiar course, I think he can do what he showed in his John Deere defence.

In his last two Wyndham Championship starts, Thompson has finished 22nd and 12th, and that 12th last year here promised to be even better as he was in 3rd place going into Sunday. He was just three shots back of the 54-hole lead 12 months ago, and considering that came hot on the heels of his first win, he might simply have run out of steam, especially after a tough couple of weeks in the UK.

Now he’s back showing signs at the right time of year again, I think he’s a sneaky play at a decent price, as this looks the right type of course, set up, and situation for him to double his PGA Tour win tally.

The Banker: Nicolai Hojgaard 45/1 e/w (bet365 8 places 1/5)

Nicolai Hojgaard wins the 2023 DP World Tour Championship.

‘Bubble boys’ is a term you are going to hear this week or something of that nature anyway, and it is going to refer to the top 70 players who qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs or the top 100 who keep their full playing rights for next year.

Nicolai Hojgaard is currently ranked 71st in the FedEx Cup Rankings, so he will keep his card for next year, largely thanks to an upturn in recent form. He will now have his sights set on a big week at the Wyndham Championship, so he can make the lucrative Playoffs as well.

I, for one, think he has a great chance, not only of recording a finish good enough to climb into the top 70, but of picking up his first win on the PGA Tour. The signs are there, having finished 2nd alongside his brother at the Zurich Classic, 24th at the Rocket Classic, where he was 10th going into Sunday, and then excelling on the links back in Europe. First came a 4th place finish at the Scottish Open, courtesy of a final round 64, and he took that good form into the Open Championship, where he finished 14th. The Dane was inside the top 10 for the first three rounds at Portrush, and while he faltered slightly on Sunday, it was a great week overall. That finish was his best so far in the majors, eclipsing his 16th on debut at Augusta last year, and he will now come into the Wyndham full of confidence.

It’s not just results either, the foundations of his game look really good as well, ranking 12th, 28th, and 10th in SG Approach in his last three starts and 20th, 12th, and 13th in SG Tee to Green. Data Golf has him ranked inside the top 50 now, far better than his 81st place ranking on the OWGR, and I tend to agree. He’s back to showing the promise that got him onto the 2023 Ryder Cup team, and if he continues this form, he can book his spot again, in an ideal world for him, next to his twin brother, Rasmus.

Both have work to do to make that a reality, and while Rasmus could still get in on points, it’s likely they will both need a pick, so getting to the FedEx Cup Playoffs and setting up a few more starts could be key.

Nicolai has played here twice now, finishing 14th on debut before missing the cut last year, and it’s that effort in 2023, when still balancing life on both tours, that offers encouragement. Now he’s fully focused on the PGA Tour and in good form coming in – I think he can win this.

The Bonus Pick: Adam Svensson 110/1 e/w (bet365 8 Places 1/5)

Adam Svennson missed the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open

One player who is playing for his future is the 2022 RSM Classic winner, Adam Svensson. The Canadian is languishing in 162nd in the FedEx Cup standings, and he will need to turn it on here at the Wyndham Championship to secure his playing rights for next year.

The good news is, he has previous of playing well here at the Wyndham, finishing 7th in back-to-back years in 2023 and 2024, and this looks like one of the best courses for him to double his PGA Tour win tally.

When 31st here on debut, Svensson shot a second-round 61 to sit in 3rd place going into the weekend. At that time, he wasn’t in a good enough place to capitalise, but now he is the type of player that can kick on from that. Two years ago, he was in position again, sitting inside the top 3 for the first two rounds, and while he finished 7th, he didn’t do a whole lot wrong over the weekend, shooting 70-68. Last year, he shot middle rounds of 65 and 66 again, to once again show a liking for the course.

It was his form last week, though, that really caught the eye, as he opened his account with a bogey-free 60, and he followed that up with two more bogey-free rounds of 68 and 65 on the weekend, after a disastrous Friday. It’s always hard following up such a low first-round score, but the 75 on Friday ruined any chance he had of contending. But I was really encouraged by the bounce back in the final two rounds.

Svensson also ranked 3rd in SG Approach and 17th in SG Tee to Green last weekend, despite that horrendous round on Friday, and he can now take that and plenty of confidence into a do-or-die situation at the Wyndham.

It was at the 2019 Wyndham Championship, where he was in a similar situation, ranking 171st in the FedEx Cup, that he shot the 61 here, and after shooting a 60 and three bogey-free rounds last week, I think he can tear up Sedgefield again and put himself in contention on Sunday.
