Apr12 Onemillionbonus

By Courses editor Kevin Brown

Most top golfers are millionaires – many of them several times over – and the top players will certainly have a chance to significantly improve their vast wealth next month when back-to-back wins in the Irish Open and BMW PGA Championship will be rewarded with a one milion Euros bonus.

This unique incentive is the brainchild of Tom Kane, proprietor of Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort which hosts the Irish Open from May 17-20, the event being followed a week later by the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth (May 24-27).

This rather generous offer means that the player who completes this unique ‘double’ will walk away with the grand total of 2,141,660 Euros – the Irish Open winner will pick up 416,660 Euros while the BMW champion will receive 725,000 Euros.

However, for this to happen history will have to be made: nobody has previously won the titles back-to-back – the tournaments have historically been played in different months – though Seve Ballesteros (1983), Bernhard Langer (1987) and Ian Woosnam (1988) have all captured both titles in the same season.

But, as we say, for Monty, Casey, Donald and co. it’s not about the money, it’s all about the titles and the glory….
