Apr24 Scotsclubscelebrations

Two famous East Lothian clubs – North Berwick and Gullane – certainly have plenty to celebrate this year: to be precise, their 175th and 125th anniversaries respectively.

North Berwick (pictured right), one of the oldest golf clubs on Planet Golf, has a long and proud history: from staging many of the legendary challenge matches of the 19th Century to hosting major events, including Final Qualifying for the Open Championship, in the 21st.

In fact it is second only to the R&A further up the Scottish coast for continuous play over the same stretch of seaside sturf.

North Berwick was founded in 1832 when it was described as a “small and decayed Burgh with little prospect.” How wrong can you get? The club and the game of golf combined to turn the town into a fashionable resort for nobility and over the years a must-visit destination for links golf lovers everywhere.

The club’s 175th anniversary will be marked with a weekend of golfing and social events on June 15-17, including a Members Guest Day involving local clubs, a family-style jazz lunch and a grand evening event in a whopping marquee sited by the 18th green.

At the end of June (June 30th) nearby Gullane starts their 125th year anniversary celebrations with a 36 hole Scratch Open event on the Number One course followed between August 24-26 by three days of competition and a dinner.

Like North Berwick, Gullane is steeped in history and a wonderful place to play the game, being the home of three outstanding 18 hole layouts. Let the celebrations begin…
