Justin’s Rose’s brilliant first round 69 at the Masters came on the back of the best putting performance of the day. The Brit used his putter just 20 times over 18 holes – an average of 1.1 putts per hole! “I holed a bunker shot, which helped”, he said, “and I holed a few off the margins which count as no-putts.” Davis Love III was second in the stats with 23 putts.
Par for the course in round one was a stratospheric 76.19, as hard fairways and hard greens to their toll on the world’s best. In total there were two eagles, 208 birdies, 1000 pars, 468 bogeys, 56 double bogeys and 12 of the dreaded “others”.
Despite being off the pace of the leaders at one over, Tiger Woods led the field in greens in regulation in the first round, hitting 77.78%, or 14 out of 18. That figure was tied by Columbian Camillo Villegas.
Sandy Lyle had a good day with the driver on Thursday, hitting 13 out of 14 fairways to lead the driving accuracy stats. But amateur Dave Womack had a bad day, finding just three fairways off the tee.
The perfect sand at Augusta National seemed to make sand saves the norm in the first round of the Masters – 18 players got up and down 100 per cent of the time, with Craig Stadler leading the list at three out of three. But several players, including Ian Poulter, only managed one out of four up-and-downs from the bunkers.
