Paul McGinley fried a fantastic second round 66, after his miserable opening 74, to be even par for the tournament, and put himself in with a real shout over the weekend. McGinley was in the penultimate group on Sunday at the Open Championship, before finishing a disappointing 19th and he has come out since Carnoustie and supported Garcia’s comments about the chaos down the stretch, describing it as “a zoo”.

“Carnoustie was a big learning experience for me,” he says. “It was a lot of fun because it’s been a long time since I was in contention and I’ve never been in the last few groups of a major before. I learned a lot. I played really good today. Hitting the fairways and greens was the key. So far so good. I’m obviously pleased with my position. I’m going to just try and play well over the weekend and what happens happens.”
