Aug11 USPGA Euros fade away

By Jock Howard

It was a disappointing day for the 17 Europeans still theoretically in with a shout of landing the fourth major of the year, and none of them made a move on ‘moving’ Saturday. As a result, it will require an unbelievable round tomorrow by one of the top contenders, if one of them is to add to Padraig Harrington’s victory in the third major of the year.
The unheralded Swede Peter Hanson is best placed (what odds would you have got on that at the beginning of the week to be top Euro?) but he is still nine shots behind Tiger. He shot a magnificent 69 and was the only one to break par.
Sergio Garcia was disqualified, after signing for a wrong score. His playing partner, Boo Weekley (not a man with a reputation for being the sharpest pencil in the pack) marked him down for a 4 at the par-4 17th. In fact the Spaniard had a 5. Boo tried to call him back when he discovered his error, but it was too late.
“That just puts the icing on the cake,” said Sergio about his year.
