World number two Jim Furyk has withdrawn from the WGC Bridgestone Invitational because of a back injury.

The 37-year-old, who won the Canadian Open on Sunday, picked up the strain during practice on Tuesday.

“I’m a little disappointed after playing so well last week and coming to a place that is probably in my top five events. I love this golf course.”

With the USPGA just a week away, the 2003 US Open champion will be hoping that the problem is a small one.

“I would love to try and be prepared and ready to go at the PGA but, if that’s not the case, I just need to be strong and healthy.

“I’ve had a good stretch the last few months of playing, so it’s a little easier to handle.”

In the last eight years, the American has recorded six top-10 places at the Firestone Country Club.
