Following his Open Championship victory at Carnoustie, Padraig Harrington has been named as The European Tour Golfer of the Month for July.

The Dubliner became the first European to win a Major since Paul Laurie in 1999 after beating Sergio Garcia in a nailbiting play-off for the famous Claret Jug.

Harrington beat Andres Romero, Gregory Havret and Colin Montgomerie to the monthly gong and the 37-year-old was delighted to accept the award.

“I am delighted to receive this honour after a month which underlined the strength of the European Tour. A lot of Europeans will be encouraged by my win because they know they can match my game and it will help them visualise the day when they win a Major.”

Harrington, who is preparing for the WGC Bridgestone Inviational in Ohio, also won the monthly award back in May following his victory in the Irish Open.
