Darren Clarke has fuelled rumours that he will be named BBC Sports Personality of the Year away by pulling out of next month’s Australian PGA Championship.

The Northern Irishman’s wife died of cancer in August and after helping Europe win the Ryder Cup and playing two other tournaments Clarke wants to be with his children.

“He’s emotionally exhausted and he needs to spend time at home with his children,” tournament spokesman John Dunlop said.

“The PGA of Australia sympathises with his position and we certainly wish him every success in the future.”

But the event, which finishes on Sunday December 10, also coincides with the Beeb’s big ceremony, which for the first time will be held in front of the public at Birmingham’s NEC.
