Euro collapse

With a couple of exceptions the third round was a disappointment for the 16 Europeans who made it through to the weekend. Paul Casey couldn’t reproduce the form which helped him to a 70 yesterday. Out in 37 and back in 39 he had three bogeys in a row from the 4th. Luke Donald was also struggling, making bogeys at the first two holes, as well as the 4th and the 6th before making a double at the 12th. Open Champion was another who couldn’t follow the brilliance he produced on Friday when he shot a 67. On Saturday his score was 10 shots worse (a 77) and he is now playing for little more than pride.
Among the success stories were the German Martin Kaymer, playing in his first US Open and the Scot Alastair Forsyth who had a 73 and a 74 respectively. And Sergio Garcia put himself right back in the hunt with a 1-under-par 70, to be 3-over for the tournament.
“I think I can still manage to do something,” he said afterwards. I would love to have been a couple of shots better but I guess I shouldn’t be too greedy. I need to hit some good putts tomorrow and see what happens.”
It will be fascinating to see what happens if he can put himself in a position to contend in the final round.
