KJ Choi is leading the US PGA Tour’s Northern Trust Open. But England’s Luke Donald is not far behind him!

Choi’s 6-under-par 65 saw six birdies and no bogeys, it was just his third bogey-free round of the year. He said: “I’ve always had trouble putting and my iron shots have always been a problem here, but I felt like they were working today, and I think even the weather was pretty pleasant when I played. So it all worked out good.”

The early starters had the best of it with relatively calm winds – the scoring average was 71.28. In the afternoon, however, winds dramatically increased, gusting to 25mph and the scoring was far tougher.

Chad Campbell and Vaughn Taylor were at 67. Phil Mickelson, who took a 30-minute commute by plane from his home north of San Diego, opened with a 68.

Donald matched that and is tied fifth with three rounds left to plau.

Sergio Garcia struggled in with a 74 and Retief Goosen slumped to a 79.

John Daly finally strung a good round together and finished with a 69. So far this year he’s missed two cuts and withdrawn from an event.

He said: “It’s nice to finally get off to a decent start,” he said.
