Feb8 Golf Foundation

Last year proved to be a stellar one for the Golf Foundation, with the charity reporting their most successful 12 months in the training of teachers and volunteers.

The Foundation’s body of Regional Development Officers (RDOs) has been demonstrating that golf can offer young people the chance to develop a range of life skills, such as respect and honesty.

And the Foundation’s “Skills for Life” message is attracting more and more mentors for the game’s starlets, with many teachers, parents and older siblings giving up their time to attract kids to golf. In total, a whopping 4,451 volunteers were trained up by RDOs, which represents a 44% increase from 2006.

The Foundation also utilised the talents of young volunteers, training over 600 teenagers from the ages of 14-18 to mentor youngsters at schools and golf clubs.

Mike Round, chief executive of the Foundation, said: “The figures clearly demonstrate that when we can attract more funding to expand our devlopment programme, there is a direct, positive result for golf in schools.”

INFORMATION: To maintain the momentum gathered in recent years, the Foundation needs more funding from golfers throughout the country. It recently started the “Commit to Junior Golf” campaign, in which it asks all golf club members to contribute £2 per annum to help protect the future of the game.
