More than 20,000 votes were cast online and by post for the annual Today’s Golfer awards. And a whopping 90 per cent of reader voted Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke the hero of the year. The golfer claims that he doesn’t want the death of his wife to win him the sympathy vote. Ian Woosnam claimed second place with Tiger Woods in third.

Tiger Woods’ fight back after the death of his father in the spring to claim the final two majors of the year, The Open and the US PGA, has landed him the TG trophy for player of the year. In second place was UK’s Paul Casey and Phil Mickelson in third.

The trophy for Best Driver over £150 went to The TaylorMade r7 which has been the most played driver on the tour notching up 46 worldwide wins in the season. In second place was the Ping G5 and in third place the Nike SasQuatch.

And the Best Game Improvement Iron went to the Ping G5 which also won the TG Irons Test in April. In second place was the Mizuno MX-900 and in third the Callaway Big Bertha.
