A West Sussex golf club is looking to produce Britain’s champions of tomorrow in a ground-breaking scholarship scheme.
The Golf at Goodwood Scholarship Programme at Goodwood GC is designed to develop and define the talent of young golfers and aid them in the mental and physical aspects of the sport.
Ultimately students on the scheme will complete the BTEC National Certificate in Sport (development, coaching and fitness) – equivalent to two A levels.
Colin Howe, the programme tutor and director, explained: “The programme is ideal for school leavers and offers an enviable opportunity for talented golfers to develop their game in all directions.
“Our students will receive world-class coaching and tuition from a selected panel of leading specialists. We adopt a holistic approach focusing on the fundamentals and all aspects of sporting performance including strength and conditioning, nutrition and health, personal and career development, emotional intelligence and academic development.”
The residential programme runs over two academic years but places are limited and open only to young golfers aged 16-plus with a handicap of 2.4 or below for males, or 4.4 or below for females. They should also have achieved – or expect to achieve – four GCSEs of grade C or above.
A three-day selection course will be held from August 22-24 when eight candidates will be selected for the 2007/8 programme.
