Graeme McDowell cruised into this month’s Open at Carnoustie after finishing nine-under-par in today’s 36 hole qualifier at Sunningdale.

The Irishman was in fine form over the Old and New courses, carding rounds of 67 and 64 to lead the way and secure his Open ticket ahead of a star-studded field.

The top 12 finishers progress to Carnoustie and also through are Peter Hanson of Sweden (-7) and young Brit Ross Fisher who prodiuced a superb 2nd round score of 64 to clinch his berth.

After opening his account with a superb 64, Nick Dougherty should also be in action at Carnoustie but there’ll be no Ian Woosnam – the veteran Welshman bowed out after rounds of 69 and 71 which left him on level par and out of this year’s championship.
