July10 Austin

American Woody Austin has decided against competing in this year’s Open Championship after admitting he is unsure how to tackle links-style golf.
The 43-year-old’s place in the third Major of the year will be taken by Australian Richard Green, who qualifies as the highest non-exempt player in the current world rankings.
Austin earned his place in the Carnoustie field through the mini Order of Merit on the US Tour, but will not make the trip to the famous links.
He told BBC Sport: “I don’t know how to play that type of golf. I would probably go and shoot two high numbers and make a fool of myself.”
Austin has only played in the Open once before, but he failed to make a lasting impression after missing the cut at Royal Lytham in 1996.
