July30 Romero

A little over a week ago Andres Romero catapulted himself onto the world golfing scene with a third-place finish at the Open. And now the Argentine has claimed his maiden European Tour victory after winning the Deutsche Bank Players’ Championship in Hamburg.

The 26-year-old carded a final round 70 which gave him a 19-under-par total, taking the title by three strokes from young Brit Oliver Wilson and Denmark’s Soren Hansen.

Romero led by two shots at the start of the final day, and extended his advantage to five strokes after four birdies and a bogey in the first seven holes. He sealed the victory on the 18th with a stunning birdie before receiving the customary champagne-drenching by fellow Argentinian players.

He said: “I feel great. I didn’t expect my first win to come this quick but I played great in the Open and coming here I was thinking maybe it could be my time.”

Romero’s victory has secured him a place at next week’s WGC Bridgestone Invitational.
