Britain and Ireland’s hopes of a victorious Walker Cup campaign this September have taken a blow after US Amateur champion Richie Ramsay opted to turn professional.

The fiery Scot endured a difficult Open Championship at Carnoustie, finishing on nine over par, but the 24-year-old has still decided to leave his amateur days behind him and will not compete at Royal County Down.

He said: “I had a great amateur experience and am grateful to everyone who supported me. Now I want to go out and see what I can achieve as a pro.”

Ramsay, who has already competed in the Masters and the US Open, will be part of the International Management Group stable, which already looks after Tiger Woods and Padraig Harrington.

His first event will be the Russian Open, which starts this Thursday (August 2).
