Jun26 Monty hires casey caddie

Colin Montgomerie has recruited Paul Casey’s ex-caddie to be his bag man at this week’s French Open.

Craig Connolly worked with Casey until the US Open at Oakmont – just before Monty sacked his long-time caddie Alastair McLean.

Though Montgomerie and Connolly will take a tournament or two to see how they get on, the expectation is they will work together for the rest of the season.

Monty celebrated his 44th birthday at the weekend and is hopeful that input from a young, eager caddie will help to lift him out of a rut.

Though the Scot has a reputation for being a demanding employer, some 30 professional caddies offered their services for his bag after the split with McLean.

Down to 48th in the world rankings after not playing in Munich last week because of illness, the Scot needs to produce improved scores if he wants to hang onto a spot in the world’s top 50, which provides exempt status into the Majors and world golf championships.
