June 1 Memorial Round One

By Jonathan Greathead

Low scores were the order of the day after the opening round of the Memorial Tournament in Ohio, with leaders Sean O’Hair, Rod Pampling and Nick O’Hern tied on seven-under par.

South African Ernie Els and Australian Aaron Baddeley were a shot adrift of the trio after rounds of 66, while World No 1 Tiger Woods finsihed the day with a two-under-par round of 70 at Muirfield Village.

But Woods was close to picking up an injury after narrowly avoiding an approach shot from Charley Hoffman on the edge of the 10th green. The ball flew past the American, only missing him by a yard.

“Today was the day to really shoot some good numbers,” Woods told the Associated Press. “Look at the field — they pretty much did. If you didn’t shoot under par, you’re going to get run over.”
