June 11 Englishmen together

While all of America will be watching the 8.06 a.m. (4.06 p.m. UK time) pairing of the world’s number one, two and three (Woods, Mickelson and Scott) the English audience will be just as concerned with the 1.14 p.m. (9.14 p.m. UK time) pairing of Ian Poulter, Paul Casey and Luke Donald.

Quite apart from anything else, all three need a good week to establish themselves in Nick Faldo’s team for Valhalla in September; but it is also about time one of them confirmed the potential they have shown for so long now.

Casey has been 15th and 10th in his last two US Opens while Donald’s best performances came in 2002 (when he was 18th) and 2006 (when he was 12th). Meanwhile, the ever colourful Poulter will hope to reproduce the form which saw him on the leaderboard for much of the 2006 US Open, where he wowed the New York crowds by wearing pink trousers and a pink shirt.
