June 12 Garcia and Wolstenholme off to rough start

Sergio Garcia’s attempt to win his first ever major championship lasted about seven minutes. From the moment he three-putted the 1st green, you could be pretty sure it wasn’t going to be his week. He may have improved his putting stroke in recent months, but it still looked very jabby during his opening few holes.
Then, to make matters worse, the Spaniard’s second shot at the 7th was a half-shank, which disappeared over a tree and down a cliff. In all he made three bogeys and two doubles on his front nine, and although he came back in 1-under-par 35 on the back (with a birdie on the final hole) he still finished with a 5-over 76, and will have to play better tomorrow if he is to make the halfway cut.
It was also a tough day in the office for England’s Gary Wolstenholme. With the BBC’s Andrew Cotter on his bag, he made a bogey at each of his first three holes, before finding the water on his 9th (the 18th) for a triple-bogey 8. Wolstenholme found out he was playing in the championship less than 24 hours before his tee off time, and only just managed to squeeze in a practise round. He too will need a minor miracle to be here at the weekend.
