Legend Seve Ballesteros will not play at next month’s Open Championship at Carnoustie after the Spaniard opted not to be on the list of 2,425 players requesting a place.

Following rounds of 86 and 80 at the US Masters, the 50-year-old said an appearance in Scotland would “depend on how I play”.

The tournament starts on July 19 and defending champion Tiger Woods will be looking to win the title for the third time in a row, a feat that has not been achieved since 1956 when Peter Thomson sealed his third consecutive win at Hoylake.
