World No 1 Tiger Woods has become a dad after wife Elin gave birth to a baby daughter.

The birth of Sam Alexis Woods came less than 24 hours after the 31-year-old tied for second in the US Open at Oakmont, one behind winner Angel Cabrera.

Woods made the announcement on his website, saying: “This is truly a special time in our lives and we look forward to introducing Sam to our family and friends over the next few weeks.”

The Open champion is next scehduled to play at the Buick Open in Michigan on June 28.
