June29 Wie Woe

Teenage sensation Michelle Wie’s miserable run of form continued as she opened up with an 11-over-par 82 in the first round of the US Women’s Open at Southern Pines.

The 17-year-old has now failed to break par for 22 consecutive rounds and she is a mammoth 14 shots off the lead set by Brazilian teenager Angela Park.

The 18-year-old shot a clinical three-under-par round of 68, giving her a one-stroke advantage over Park In-Bee, Lee Jee Young and Karine Icher, although the trio failed to complete their rounds due to storms that ended play early on the opening day.

Defending champion Annika Sorenstam is on level par through 13, while Laura Davies and Janice Moodie lead the British charge on one over through 14.

Alexis Thompson, the youngest-ever qualifier for the event at age 12, is three over after her opening nine holes.
