England soccer coach Steve McClaren was on duty at Matfen Hall, Northumberland, earlier today to help open the first new golf course to be designed in the region this century – the nine-hole Dewlaw Course.
Under-fire England supremo McClaren popped into the classy north east venue, along with Matfen’s Touring Professional Ken Ferrie and Olympic triple jump gold medallist Jonathan Edwards, shortly after leading England to a much-needed 3-0 victory in Estonia.
The Dewlaw is an addition to the existing 18 hole Matfen course, the result being a rigorous and challenging 27 hole golfing complex.
The new nine has been designed jointly by Director of Coaching at Matfen Hall, John Harrison and Craig Parkinson, Director of Golf.
All of the greens have been built to a full USGA specification, and sown with a traditional fescue/bent grass seed mixture. All the fairways, tees, and rough were seeded from scratch and 5,000 new trees were planted
Measuring just over 3400 yards, Dewlaw features some notable holes including a near 600 yards par 5 and a cracking 170 yards par 3 over water and marshland.
Ken Ferrie says: “ This is an interesting and extremely well designed course. It compliments very well the existing 18 holes, and I particularly like how the natural features are integrated into the design, giving it an instantly mature feel and appearance.“
