The eagerly-awaited start of the new Fantasy League – the US Masters – is just weeks away and things are certainly warming up nicely.
Of course, the $64million question is: Can anybody stop the Tiger after the mighty Woods romped to yet another victory in Florida at the weekend.
Probably not, though you’ve probably realised sticking Tiger in your Fantasy League team will cost you a whopping $9m, leaving you just $6m to play with for your other five players.
So selecting the top dude is a considerable gamble – but is it, if he keeps winning?
No way, more like a nice spot of business, specially as he reckons there’s still room for improvement in his red-hot game.
After bagging his fifth straight US PGA TOUR title and his sixth success on the trot (he also triumphed in the Dubai Desert Classic) at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, perfectionist Tiger revealed: “I’ve got things to work on.
“You’ve got to keep working, got to keep going forward though it’s been great to turn a mediocre week into a good one.”
One to watch out for at Augusta could be Sean O’Hair who is also in hot form – he finished tied 3rd behind Tiger at the weekend – and will only set you back $1.2m which has got to be good value in anybody’s book. The gangly O’Hair has shot up to 27th in the World Rankings.
Even with a $4m price tag on his head, experienced campaigner Vijay Singh, a past Masters champion of course and a real steady performer, shouldn’t be overlooked.
Singh was well in the running in Arnie’s Invitational bash though was eventually made to pay dearly for dunking the ball in the drink which led to a 3rd round score of 73.
Pick of the Fantasy League Brits could well be ‘steady Eddie’ Luke Donald, potentially fine value at $3 and the more experienced Lee Westwood ($2.5) who is enjoying a form revival and still believes he has got a major title in him.
Also, keep an eye on Irish pair Graeme McDowell and Paul McGinley, a bargain $1m and $1,2m respectively. They could be good longterm investments after taking the Ballantines Championship by storm at the weekend, McDowell winning after a thrilling play-off and former Ryder Cup hero McGinley finishing third.
