Lee Westwood is on the brink of his first European Tour win in over three years.

The former world No4 has had a torrid time of late and his best finish so far this year was a tied 9th at the TCL Classic. He languishes in 43rd on the European Tour money list.

All that could be about to change at the European Tour’s Andalucia Open.

He shot a new course record 64 on Friday and could have gone one better than that yesterday. He bogeyed the last two holes to end with a 65 and a one shot lead over in-form Spaniard, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano.

Westwood said he was ‘delighted’ to be back at sharp end. “I came here trying to find my putting stroke and I’ve ticked all the boxes on that. Now I can build up some confidence,”

Westwood has a good record of winning from the front and he’s chasing his 17th Tour win. “I’m a pretty good front-runner and I’ve probably got more experience of anyone in the field of winning.”
