Phil Mickelson is back. He won The Players championship in style and showed the world exactly what he’s capable of.

Mickelson has been using Tiger’s ex-coach Butch Harmon for the last few weeks and it all came together spectacularly over the last four days as he romped to victory in what has become known as the ‘fifth major’.. Mickelson was back to his gung-ho, fire-at-the-flag best.

Since messing up at last year’s US Open, speculation has encircled the left-handed maestro. Could he bounce back? Is he a spent force that will never come to terms with such a crushing, self-imposed loss?

He answered those questions – and then some – on Sunday as he closed with a ‘stress-free’ 69.

“I’m really excited about the direction we’re headed” was Mickelson’s understated summary of the last four days.

The US Open is only a couple of weeks ago and Mickelson says he’s not ready for that just yet. But his meticulous preparation is already under way and the golfing world is waiting to see what ‘Lefty’ has in store when the second Major of the year begins.

Luke Donald faded away in the final round with a disappointing 74 to end up tied 16th. And Ian Poulter had a solid tournament, finishing tied 28th.
