Things are looking rosy again for Lee Westwood. The Worksop-based star finally came good at the weekend, claiming his first tournament win in four years with a dramatic 40-ft putt to secure the Valle Romano Open de Andalucia at Aloha Golf Club.
Westwood is hungry for more success and already has his sights fixed on the Quinn Direct British Masters at The Belfry in September.
He confirmed: “I’ m really looking forward to competing in the Quinn Direct British Masters. The win in Spain was important to me because I’d been playing well, but just not getting the victories.
“The Brabazon at The Belfry is a great course and it always reminds me of the 2002 Ryder Cup win. My aim now is to build on the Andalucian title and hopefully by the time the British Masters comes round, I’ll be on my best form for years.”
Westwood’s Spanish triumph, which included a course record 64, marked a spectacular return to form and launched him back into the world’s top 50 in 48th place. In 2000, Westwood dominated Europe with six tournament wins, equalling the record set by Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie. He won three times in 2003 and, although he has been unbeaten in the Ryder Cup since then, a tournament win eluded him…until Sunday.
The British Masters takes places on September 20-23 and includes a Pro-Am day on the 19th.
