Little St Ives Golf Club in rural Cambridgeshire has finally achieved its dream of becoming a full 18-hole course…after a wait of over 80 years!

St Ives GC started golfing life as a six-holer in 1923 with three holes being added in the mid-1950s to make it a nine-hole layout. Now finally, after all these years, it’s set to become the ‘full monty’  – work recently got underway to turn it into a 6,800 yards, par 72 layout.

The new course has been designed by Cameron Sinclair and is plotted on a completely new site east of St Ives.

The project is costing well over £2m and will include full irrigation and fairway watering, USGA-spec tees and greens, clubhouse and a 400m driving range. Course construction is expected to be finished in October though there will be a lengthy ‘growing in’ period before it’s opening in May, 2009.

That will certainly be an occasion to savour for St Ives officials and members. You could say it’s long-awaited…
