Luke Donald received a massive thumbs up from the Wentworth spectators today.

We carried out a mini poll among the galleries to try and find out who the fans thought would be the next major-winning Brit and young Englishman Donald emerged a clear victor.

It’s been eight long years since a home player triumphed at major level – Scot Paul Lawrie clamed The Open spoils at Carnoustie in 1999 – but the Wentworth fans reckon ‘steady eddie’ Donald is well capable of emulating Lawrie’s feat.

Here’s just some of the fans’ verdicts:

“I reckon it will be Luke Donald. He’s a straight hitter with every club in his bag and he usually manages to keep in control of himself and his game when under pressure.” Henry Appleton, 23 handicapper from Hampshire.

“”It’s got to be Luke Donald, specially for the US Open which should be his type of course. He’s a neat golfer, a good putter and has been doing well in America anyway.” Bruce Illingworth, 6 handicappr from Letchworth, Herts.

“I’d like to see Lee Westwood do it but realistically I think Paul Casebetter has got a better chance. He played well in the Ryder Cup and has come back well after a dip in form.” David Whiteman from Biggleswade, Beds.

“Luke Donald is very steady but I’m going to go for Justin Rose who is a better shot-maker and has been putting in some good rounds this season despite a recent back injury. It’s all about putting four good rounds together and so far Rose has fallen short in that department.” John Barnard, 15 handicapper from Goring.

“I think it will be between Luke Donald and Justin Rose who are both young and doing very well at the moment. Hopefully though it will be an Italian,” quipped Italian-born Walter Guela, a 24 handicappr from Walton-on-Thames.

AC Milan may have won this week’s Champions League but we think poor Walter will be disappointed on this particular sporting front. Hopefully us Brits won’t be similarly deflated and that somebody from somewhere, whether it be Donald, Rose or even Monty, can celebrate a momentous major victory…and the sooner the better: our game is crying out for a British major winner…
