May26 montyswoe

These are testing times for Colin Montgomerie who has been going through the golfing ringer – not for the first time in his illustrious career – of late.

They’re also frustrating times as Monty showed during yesterday’s near-disastrous round at Wentworth where a 76 nearly saw him miss the cut. The Scot knew that and as a result threatened to ‘throw the toys out of the pram’ in the heat of battle.

To his credit, he managed to keep his emotions in check when it mattered most, finishing with two last-ditch birdies which enabled him to play over the weeeknd.

Deep down thoughy Monty himself knows he’s struggling – he’s even described his game as “rubbish”  – yesterday’s effort was his joint worst-ever perfornance at Wentworth where he has savoured a hat-trick of victories in this particular event.

Obviously he could see things desperately see things slipping away from him until his late rally but that’s been the story of his campaign so far: not only did he miss the cut in the Masters he’s had to settle for just two top ten finishes this term, his best result being tied 6th in the not-so-prestigious Johnnie Walker Classic.

And for somebody used to regularly walking off with the main prize that is hard to take and accept. Monty is at a loss to explain his current plight, only saying: “My form at the mment? I shot 76, I’ve nothing else to add to that.”

It will be extremely interesting to see how the 43-year-old fares over the weekend, specially with the US Open and The Open at Carnoustie not too far on the horizon. There’s no doubt he’ll want to get back into the winning habit and on a high for those. Otherwise, Monty’s long fruitless search for a major will continue…
