Justin Rose missed out on a victorious comeback from injury when he lost the BMW Championship at Wentworth after a play-off.
Rose bounced back on a difficult day with a birdie on the last to force the event – The European Tour’s biggest of the year – to extra holes.
With rain lashing the Surrey course and Vijay Singh tucked safely in the clubhouse as seven under it looked as if four or five players would make the play-off. Pars were a struggle and birdies practically unheard of.
But Rose and Anders Hansen dug deep to birdie the last and finish at eight under.
Hansen then drained a 15 foot birdie putt. Rose had an 11-footer to keep the play-off going but just missed.
Rose said: “It’s disappointing to come so close. It was all over so quickly. It’s hard not to be pleased about playing so well at home and playing so well in a tournament I really do love.”
Rose has not played competitively since he finished tied fifth at The Masters in April.
