May29 New cleveland irons
Last updated:
Cleveland has unveiled two sets of irons designed to end the cavity/feel conundrum – the CG Reds and CG Golds.
Both sets use gel inserts in the head to increase the amount of feel you might normally expect with cavity back irons.
The CG Reds are aimed at the lower handicapper. They have a classically shaped, compact head with less offset, making them workable and easy to shape. Interestingly, Cleveland says the red gel insert is slightly firmer, which helps to maintain softer feel when shots are struck off-centre, which is where normal cavity backs lack feel.
The CG Golds use a softer insert to offer average golfers the sort of feel normally reserved for those good enough to use forged or bladed irons. Their centre of gravity is also 15 per cent deeper, so off-centre hits aren’t punished too harshly.
Gel-filled irons is an interesting concept, so we couldn’t wait to get our hands on these to see if they lived up to the marketing hype. Both sets are beautifully shaped, look powerful behind the ball and they feel pretty good. If you want to maximise feel without sacrificing forgiveness, the CG Reds and Golds could be right up your street.
Both sets should be in shops now, but at the time we went to press Cleveland was unable to confirm prices. Apart from saying they’d be very competitive! Details: www.clevelandgolf.com, 01252 761300.
