World Number 10 Retief Goosen has lambasted Michelle Wie’s latest invitation to a high-profile men’s event.
The 17-year-old will feature at the John Deere Classic in July and South African Goosen is less than impressed that the starlet, who is currently out with a wrist injury, has been drafted in.
The two-time US Open winner said: “The players in general feel it is not right. If she qualifies to play in an event then fine, but there are youngsters and good players coming up who could have taken that spot and broken through.”
At most Tour events the sponsors reserve a number of spots for players who are not eligible for the event, and the American will be expected to draw the crowds.
Wie is scheduled to make her comeback in the LPGA’s Ginn Tribute event in South Carolina, and Goosen is unsure as to why she continues to feature in PGA Tour events.
“We all know with her playing in men’s events that she is not going to get anywhere, so I’m not really sure what she is trying to achieve. I think it has been damaging to her game.”
