Kettering Golf Club steward Cheryl Oakes is still on cloud nine after being named the first winner of the English Golf Union’s Club Steward-of-the-Year.

Cheryl walked away with the coveted prize, beating fellow stewards from all over the country at a special awards ceremony – sponsored by Fuller’s London Pride – at London’s Chamberlain Hotel.

And she did so in front of her delighted colleagues at the Northamptonshire club, including husband Simon who is also part of the Kettering GC team.

Commented proud Kettering secretary/manager John Gilding: “Cheryl has done a great job and this award is all about saving the club money, efficiency… and having a permanent smile on your face at work.”

In addition to her trophy, Cheryl won two tickets for a day’s play at a Lord’s Test Match, with two nights accommodation at a Fuller’s Hotel.

After receiving her award Cheryl said “I’m absolutely over the moon to win this award. I love my role at Kettering, and get a real buzz every time I set foot in the clubhouse. I was staggered to discover how many of my customers had actually taken the time to send in an entry.

“It’s very easy to make a positive impression, and when someone’s had a terrible round, it doesn’t take much to put a smile back on their face – and it’s something I love doing.”

The other three Regional Winners were, for the North, Steve Abbott of Eaton Golf Club in Chester; for the South East, Keith Sessions of Goring & Streatley Golf Club in Berkshire; for the South West, Brian Hobson of Long Ashton Golf Club in Bristol.

The London Pride EGU Steward of the Year is part of a five year deal between Fuller’s and the EGU which supports amateur golf and provides greater recognition to clubs and their members.
