Wentworth Golf Club plans to reconstruct all the greens and approaches on the world-famous West Course after the 2009 BMW PGA Championship.

The decision to replace the current poa/colonial bent grass greens with USGA specification greens comes after South African ace Ernie Els’ major overall refurbishment of the course two years ago.

Said Els who will again be involved with the latest Wentwoprth changes: “Now we’ve got the chance to bring the greens up to the standard of the rest of the course – and, by that I mean world-class.

“It’s exciting to be part of these ongoing developments to the West Course. I’ve always felt this is one of the best courses in the world – now it will have some of the best greens too.”

Chris Kennedy, Wentworth’s Courses Manager, confirmed: “This is something we’ve wanted to do for some time and I’m very pleased that the opportunity has now arisen. We recognise that the Harry Colt greens constructed in 1926 do not perform as well as new USGA specification greens.”

Julian Small, Wentworth’s Chief Executive, revealed: “We aim to open the course solely for member and guest play in the latter part of 2009 and we are confident that we’ll be in a positiion to have the West Course greens in excellent condition for the 2010 BMW PGA Championship.

“During the period of closure we will not have any visitor or group play on any of our three courses so as to offer exclusive access to our members at all times.”
