Sept27 Ryder Cup Woe
Last updated:
Preparations for Europe’s defence of the Ryder Cup next year have been dealt a significant a blow, after Paul McGinley stood down as one of Nick Faldo’s assistants.
The Irishman, who holed the winning putt at the Belfry five years ago, cited workload as a major factor in his decision as well as wanting to play himself into the team for next year’s event at Valhalla.
European captain Faldo said: “From the start he was concerned about the workload. I spoke to Paul last week and he said, ‘I’ve got a lot of events coming up’. I can sense the rumblings and then we spoke again and he decided to withdraw his position.
“He wants to play himself into the team for Valhalla. Good luck to him. The man holed a winning putt in the Ryder Cup and that’s the sort of player I want in my team.”
Faldo, who skippers the Great Britain and Ireland side in The Seve Trophy this week, omitted McGinley from his team but insisted that decision was not the catalyst for McGinley’s decision to resign.
