What we say...

Does the PXG golf ball deliver on the promise of ultimate distance and control?

PXG, the golf company founded by GoDaddy billionaire Bob Parsons, has spent the last decade trying to produce the ultimate in golf equipment. PXG’s ‘money no object’ approach has led to some very impressive golf clubs – albeit often at very meaty price points – and one of the best golf balls.

In 2023, after almost a decade of R&D, PXG is expanding its range to include golf balls for the first time. And, in a move that won’t surprise anyone familiar with Parsons or PXG, they feel the PXG Xtreme Golf Balls are the best golf balls money can buy. As the typically understated ad states: “Nobody makes golf balls the way we do. Period.”

“PXG is first and foremost a research and development company,” says Parsons. “Everything we do starts with a question: ‘Can we make a better product?’ For a long time, despite our best efforts, we weren’t sure if we could make a better golf ball. But we didn’t stop trying. Adding a new partner to expand our engineering capabilities and leveraging years of data and testing, we are pleased and proud to finally introduce a golf ball good enough to earn the PXG name.”

PXG say their new golf ball delivers “big distance, snappy green-grabbing control, and a slick new alignment aid to help you sink more putts”.

Put another way, the ad says the new PXG golf balls are: “Like a gymnast wearing a jet pack getting fired through a howitzer. They go far and stick the landing.”

Interestingly, whereas most brands have several models of golf ball to suit different swing speeds and a golfer’s preference of feel and performance, PXG say they have “the one ball that does it all”. PXG say the three-piece golf ball delivers quality, consistency, and performance with every shot, from every lie, for every golfer.

The technology in the PXG golf ball

The PXG golf ball features a soft urethane bright white outer cover designed to maximize spin and control for your approach shots and around the green with exceptional durability.

The 338-dimple pattern is designed to maximize distance with the driver while producing a high trajectory with optimal spin when hit with irons and wedges.

The PXG golf ball’s firm ionomer mantle layer is engineered to increase speed and distance off the tee.

The PXG golf ball features a nice alignment aid

The new PXG golf ball also has a distinctive alignment aid to help players easily line up their ball on the green and sink more putts.

How does the PXG golf ball perform?

As with any golf equipment, the manufacturer’s claims are one thing, but the proof is in the testing.

The PXG golf ball has already been tested by a Golf Laboratories robot. Golf Laboratories are widely seen as the leader in testing in the golf industry, used by nearly all the major equipment manufacturers, as well as the USGA and R&A.

They compared the performance of the PXG golf ball against the market-leading Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x.

How the PXG golf ball compares to the Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x

The PXG golf ball produced ball speeds that matched or beat the Pro V1 and Pro V1x with a wedge, 8-iron and driver. A driver carry distance of 241.6 yards at 100mph club head speed was 5.8 yards ahead of the Titleist Pro V1, although the PXG ball was pipped on carry and total distance with driver by the Pro V1x.

The spin rate of the PXG golf ball compared to Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x

When it came to spin, the PXG produced more spin than both the Pro V1 and Pro V1x across the board, except with an 8-iron, where the Pro V1x span 37rpm more.

Price and availability

With an RRP of £44.99/$39.99 per dozen, the PXG golf ball is cheaper than the Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x, which come in at £50/$54.99. Given it matches the best premium golf balls available, at a lower price, the PXG golf ball may prove a very popular choice.

PXG Xtreme Golf Balls are now available through the company’s retail stores and hubs, over the phone with PXG Player Support, and on www.PXG.com. They will also be sold on Amazon from March.

Continuing PXG’s relationship with the US Marines (Parsons is a Marine Corps veteran), the PXG golf balls will also be available in a limited edition that features the official United States Marine Corps logo.
