As sure as death and taxes… Schauffele extends a record only bettered by Tiger Woods
Published:

Xander Schauffele has made 66 consecutive cuts after securing his spot for the weekend at Oakmont as he looks to add the US Open trophy to his CV.
The American has made 30 of 33 cuts at the majors in his career and hasn’t missed one since the 2022 Masters.
In fact, that was when his current streak of made cuts began – a run that has seen him win five times, including the 2024 PGA and Open Championships and record 13 other top-five victories.
What makes his record even more impressive is that he’s maintained his ability to play all four days despite a long layoff with a rib injury at the start of the season. While he hasn’t hit the heights of 2024, remaining winless since Royal Troon last July, the signs are good.
History suggests victory is unlikely for the 31-year-old this week, but with a little jump up the leaderboard across the final two rounds, he could further expand his incredible US Open record.
Since making his debut at what is undoubtedly the toughest major in 2017, the Californian has seven top 10s in his eight starts (T5-T6-T3-5-T7-T14-T10-T7). He’ll be aiming to make it eight from nine as he heads into the weekend, but will need to put in an excellent 36 holes after four bogeys on the back nine on Friday left him +6 and Tied-47th.

Regardless of his final result at Oakmont, Schauffele will head to Portrush in July with high hopes of becoming the first man since Padraig Harrington in 2008 to successfully defend the Claret Jug.
He’s expected to tee it up at least twice more before then, including next week’s Traveler’s Championship, as he looks for that first victory of 2025 and aims to further extend his cut streak.
The World No.3’s run is comfortably the longest active streak in golf and the second longest ever, behind, you guessed it, Tiger Woods. But he still has a long way to go before challenging Woods’ record: an incredible 142 consecutive cuts made from 1998 to 2005. That run began at the Buick Invitational and ended when Woods missed the weekend by one stroke at the 2005 EDS Byron Nelson Championship.
To put Woods’ and Schauffele’s runs into context, the average streak on the PGA Tour is just four.
Behind Schauffele, the next best active streak belongs to Scottie Scheffler, who has made 57 consecutive cuts. The World No.1 has also progressed to the weekend at Oakmont, where a host of big names missed out.
