Westwood and Donald head a host of big names missing the cut at The Open

Lee Westwood and Luke Donald suffered disappointing weeks at Royal St George’s as the English pair both missed the cut in the 140th Open Championship.
Hopes had been high that Westwood could finally get a Major victory under his belt this week. He had five top-three finishes in his previous eight Majors but was unable to capitalise on the sunshine and relatively light winds on Friday morning.
Westwood made three bogeys in his first five holes of the tournament and never really recovered and signed for rounds of 71 and 73.
Donald, who won last week’s Scottish Open, had looked like he would comfortably make the cut until he bogeyed the final four holes to miss out by three.
Former champions Padraig Harrington and Ernie Els and Nick Watney, Matteo Manassero, Robert Karlsson, Francesco Molinari, Matt Kuchar and Alvaro Quiros all missed the cut as well.
But perhaps the most disappointing Friday performances to miss the cut came from Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter.
McDowell played the back nine in just 31 shots yesterday to reach -2 overnight but failed to make a birdie in a second round 77.
Poulter did manage one birdie but this was joined on his scorecard by nine bogeys in a messy 78.
