Farmers Insurance Open 2024: Preview of the fourth event on the PGA Tour

The West Coast Swing continues on the PGA Tour at the Farmers Insurance Open, held at Torrey Pines across the North and South Course in San Diego, California

Max Homa returns to the tournament as defending champion having fired in a final round 66 to beat fellow American Keegan Bradley by two shots last January. Homa started the fourth round of last year’s Farmers Insurance Open five shots behind Sm Ryder who was looking for his first PGA Tour victory. An inspired 6-under-par final round by Homa was enough to conquer the field and earn the American his sixth PGA Tour title.

Winning the Farmers Insurance Open proved to be just the beginning of an impressive 2023 season for Max Homa. There’ll be a whole host of competitors looking for this event to kickstart their season. There are no champions from this season lining up this weekend – following a turbulent 24 hours, Nick Dunlap has withdrawn from the Farmers Insurance Open and is heading home to Alabama.

Who is playing in the Farmers Insurance Open?

The PGA Tour’s second event of the West Coast Swing attracts 20 of the world’s top 50 players.

As mentioned, last week American Express champion Nick Dunlap will be teeing it up this week at Torrey Pines alongside 2023 champion Max Homa. Other notable players playing this week are home favorites Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, and Collin Morikawa. Fans will be hoping for Min Woo Lee to cook up something good in California and achieve his first win on the PGA Tour. However, it could be a member of Europe’s Ryder Cup Team who takes home the trophy with Ludvig Aberg, Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, Robert MacIntyre, and Nicolai Hojgaard all in San Diego this week.

What is the format of the Farmers Insurance Open?

The Farmers Insurance Open is a traditional strokeplay format, played across two separate par 72 courses.

After playing one round on each course, the North Course and South Course, the players who make the cut after day two will play the final two rounds on the South Course before the winner is crowned on Saturday. Scoring is expected to be the lowest so far this season with a projected even par cut line.

Due to the NFL Conference Championship Games taking place on Sunday 28, the PGA Tour has once again moved play of the Farmers Insurance Open forward a day – as it has since 2022. This means the tournament begins on Wednesday and concludes on Saturday.

Where is the Farmers Insurance Open played?

The Farmers Insurance Open will be held across two different courses at Torrey Pines in San Diego, California. All 156 golfers in the field will play one round on the par 72 North Course which measures 7,258 yards in length and one round on the longer par 72 South Course which is 7,765 yards long. The 65 and ties who make the cut will play the final two rounds on the South Course.

Fellow Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teammate Patrick Cantlay, looking for his ninth PGA Tour victory, is second-favorite, with defending champion Max Homa 12/1 to lift the trophy for the second year in a row.
